Ceramic Coating Cost in Austin: What You Actually Get

What a ceramic coating costs in Austin, what the price actually pays for, whether it's worth it in Texas sun, and how coating, wax and PPF compare.

By RDR DetailingUpdated 5 min read

A professional ceramic coating in Austin costs about $600 to $2,500. With the paint polished first, most cars land between $1,200 and $2,000. The coating itself is only part of the price. Most of what you're paying for is the prep work that happens before it goes on.

What the price actually pays for

A coating bonds to whatever is on the paint when it goes on. If there are swirls, they're sealed in for years. If there's grime, the coating won't bond properly and fails early. So a proper job looks like this:

  1. Wash. A careful hand wash to get the loose dirt off without adding scratches.
  2. Decontamination. An iron remover dissolves embedded brake dust, then a clay treatment pulls out what's left, so the paint is smooth to the touch.
  3. Polish. At minimum a light polish so the coating bonds to fresh clear coat. If the paint has swirls, this becomes a full paint correction.
  4. Panel wipe. Removes polishing oils so nothing sits between the paint and the coating.
  5. Coating. Applied panel by panel, leveled, then left to cure, ideally overnight in a garage.

Steps one through four are most of the hours. That's why two coatings using the same product can be priced hundreds of dollars apart: one shop is doing the prep properly and the other isn't.

Is a ceramic coating worth it in Texas?

For a car you plan to keep a few years, usually yes. Central Texas is hard on paint in specific ways, and a coating handles most of them:

  • Sun. UV is what fades and dulls clear coat over time. A coating takes that exposure instead of the paint.
  • Water spots. Sprinklers and rain leave mineral deposits that etch in the heat. On a coated car they sit on top of the coating and come off far more easily. There's more on this in our guide to hard water spots in Austin.
  • Pollen, sap and bird droppings. They bond less to a slick surface and wash off with less scrubbing, which means fewer chances to scratch the paint.
  • Washing. A coated car rinses clean faster and stays clean longer, so every wash after is quicker and cheaper.

What a coating won't do: stop rock chips, prevent deep scratches, or make the car self-cleaning. If you drive a lot of highway miles and worry about chips, paint protection film on the front end is the right tool, and a coating can go on top of it.

Coating vs wax vs paint protection film

Wax or sealant Ceramic coating Paint protection film
Lasts Weeks to months 2 to 5+ years 5 to 10 years
Protects against Light UV, makes washing easier UV, chemicals, water spotting, easier washing Rock chips, scratches, scuffs
Typical cost Low $600 to $2,500 Often $1,500+ for the front end alone

Do you need paint correction first?

If the paint has swirls you can see in sunlight, yes. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so polishing first is how you get the deep, clear gloss people expect from a coated car. New cars often need it too, since dealer prep and transport wash marks are common. We look at the paint before quoting, and if a light polish is enough, that's what we recommend. Our paint correction page explains one-step versus two-step.

Can a ceramic coating be done at home?

Yes, as long as there's a garage or a covered, enclosed space for the coating to cure. The car needs to stay clean and dry for about 12 hours after application. That's why we bring the whole job to you: the prep and coating happen in your driveway or garage, and the car cures overnight in your own garage instead of sitting at a shop for two or three days.

Taking care of a coated car

  • Keep it dry for the first day, and skip soap for about a week while the coating fully hardens.
  • Wash with a pH-neutral soap and clean mitts, or use a touchless wash. Avoid automatic brush washes.
  • Dry with a clean microfiber or a blower so minerals don't dry on the surface.
  • Get a maintenance wash or a reload every so often. Ours includes a free reload at 6 to 12 months.

Questions

How long does a ceramic coating last in Texas?

A professional coating is usually rated 2 to 5 years depending on the product. Texas sun and frequent washing are at the hard end of that, so regular maintenance washes and a reload partway through make a real difference to how long it keeps working.

Can I take a coated car through a car wash?

A touchless wash is fine. Avoid brush and cloth automatic washes: they won't strip the coating right away, but they add swirls on top of it.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?

It resists light wash marring better than bare clear coat, but it isn't scratch-proof and won't stop rock chips. Paint protection film is the answer for chips.

Do I need a garage for a ceramic coating?

For a coating, yes, or at least an enclosed covered space, so it can cure clean and dry for about 12 hours. Paint correction on its own doesn't need a garage, just shade.

How long does a ceramic coating take?

A coating alone is about a day. Paint correction plus a coating is one to two days depending on the paint, then it cures overnight.
