How Much Does Car Detailing Cost in Austin?

What car detailing really costs in Austin, what pushes the price up, and how to tell a good quote from a bad one. Includes our full price list by vehicle size.

By RDR DetailingUpdated 6 min read

In Austin, a maintenance detail usually runs about $100 to $200, a full interior and exterior detail about $200 to $500, and a ceramic coating anywhere from $600 to $2,500. Where your car lands in those ranges comes down to three things: how big it is, what shape it's in, and how much work the package actually includes.

Below is how detailing is priced here, what changes the number, and our own prices by vehicle size so you can compare like for like.

Typical car detailing prices in Austin

These are the ranges Austin detailers publish, mobile and shop-based, for a sedan or a small SUV. Large trucks, three-row SUVs and rough interiors sit at the top of each range.

Service Typical Austin price What it should include
Maintenance detail $100 to $200 Hand wash, wheels and tires, full vacuum, interior wipe-down, glass
Full detail, inside and out $200 to $500 Everything above plus steam, stain treatment, leather care, vents and door jambs
Interior only $150 to $350 Deep vacuum, steam, stain and odor treatment, leather care
Paint correction $400 to $1,200+ Machine polishing that removes swirls, haze and light scratches
Ceramic coating $600 to $2,500 Wash, decontamination, a polish, then a coating rated for years

If a price sits well below these ranges, look closely at what's included. A $99 "full detail" is usually a quick wash and vacuum. If a ceramic coating is a few hundred dollars, it's often a spray sealant that lasts months, not a coating that lasts years.

What actually changes the price

Vehicle size

A three-row SUV has roughly twice the carpet, seating and glass of a coupe, and the exterior takes longer to wash and dry by hand. That's why almost every detailer in Austin prices by size. What matters is that the size classes are clear before you book, so there's no argument in the driveway about whether your Tahoe is a "large SUV."

Condition

Heavy pet hair, sand ground into the carpet, stained seats or a car that hasn't been cleaned in a year all take real time. A good detailer tells you before starting if the car needs more than the package covers, and agrees the price with you then. What you should never get is a surprise number after the work is done.

What's in the package

Two "full details" at different prices are often different jobs. Check for steam on the high-touch surfaces, stain treatment, leather cleaning and conditioning, compressed air through the vents, and whether door jambs and wheel wells are included. On the outside, a decontamination step (iron and tar removal) and a sealant make a full detail last much longer.

Process and products

This is the part you can't see on a price list. A careful hand wash uses a pre-rinse or foam to lift grit first, separate buckets or mitts, clean towels for every car, and filtered water so nothing dries into spots. A cheap wash with one bucket and reused towels drags grit across the paint, and those swirls cost a few hundred dollars to polish out later.

Is mobile detailing more expensive than a shop?

Usually not, at least not in Austin. A mobile detailer has to carry water and power to every job, but there's no building to pay rent on, so prices end up close to a shop's. The real difference is your time. A shop means a drop-off and a pick-up, sometimes a full day without the car. Mobile means the car never moves, and you can be at work or at home while it's done.

The one place mobile has limits is ceramic coating, which needs a clean, dry space to cure overnight. If you have a garage, mobile works fine. If you don't, a shop is the better choice for a coating.

How to tell a good quote from a bad one

  • The price is written down before the work starts. On a website, in a text, anywhere you can point to later.
  • What's included is spelled out. "Full detail" means nothing on its own.
  • You know what happens if the car is worse than expected. The answer should be: they show you and you agree before they start.
  • They take before and after photos. That protects both of you if there's ever a question about a scratch.
  • You pay after you've seen the result. A large deposit for a regular detail is a red flag.

How often should you pay for a detail?

For a daily driver in Central Texas, a full detail two to four times a year with a maintenance detail every four to six weeks in between keeps a car looking right. A car that's kept up never needs the heavy reset. There's more on timing in our guide to how often to detail your car in Texas.

Ways to spend less without cutting corners

  • Stay on a schedule. A car that's kept up never needs the extra time that heavy pet hair, stains or baked-on grime add, so every visit stays at the package price.
  • Protect the paint once. A sealant or a ceramic coating makes every wash after it faster and easier, and keeps the paint from needing correction later.
  • Do more than one car in a visit. Each car is still priced by its own size, but you save the scheduling and the time.
  • Only add what you need. Pet hair removal and stain work are worth it when the car needs them. Skip them when it doesn't.

Questions

Do mobile detailers in Austin charge a travel fee?

Some do. We don't charge one anywhere in our service area, which runs about 30 miles out from the Domain, from Georgetown down to Kyle and out to Lakeway.

Is a tip expected for car detailing?

It's appreciated, never required. Most people tip 10 to 20 percent for a job they're happy with. With us, 100 percent of every tip goes to the detailer who did the work.

When do you pay for a detail?

With us, after the detail, once you've looked the car over. When you book online your card is saved, not charged, and the charge goes through when the job is done.

Why are some full details so much cheaper?

Usually because they include less: no steam, no stain treatment, no decontamination, or a faster wash process. Compare what's listed, not just the headline price.

What does ceramic coating cost in Austin?

Most real coatings applied by a pro run $600 to $2,500 depending on the product, the vehicle size and how much paint correction is needed first. Ours start at $950. See our ceramic coating cost guide for the details.
